The Internet: A relationship killer

The 17 minute video of a teenage boy's computer screens seem catches a significant amount of my attention. As one of his contemporaries I can relate to the actions he took in this video. Although the actions he took seem to be a little bit extreme, I can still relate to them. Social media can make someone insane especially if you are in some type of relationship which is many cases is already stressful enough. Social media sites such a Twitter,Facebook,Instagram and Tumblr can cause crazy assertions about things that are not even rational. Something as simple as someone commenting/liking your girlfriend's/boyfriend's picture can cause someone to thing that their girlfriend is engaging in some type of intimate discrete relationship. This assertion can consume your life and cause you to engage in actions that you would not normally do. Social media is like some type of drug to me. It consumes your mind and causes you to be paranoid and act crazy. In this video, this boy's outrageous actions are on display. You see the assumptions he makes just off something so simple. As soon as his girlfriend signs off Skype, he automatically assumes that his girlfriend is attempting to break up with him without any actually evidence. He then reacts on instinct and hacks her Facebook rather that being patient and allowing the evidence to come to him.

After watching the conclusion of this video, I have came to the conclusion that a life without social media is a more sane life. If someone cuts out social media for one month, you will notice that they are a more positive and calm person. The media can completely change the personality of someone. The become more combative and aggressive. In this video, this boy had a wide range of emotions that he was going through when he finally figured out that his girlfriend was actually breaking up with him. he went from being angry and aggressive to being sad and sentimental. To sum it up, social media make you CRAZY.

What's the Future of Body Hacking in the age of Patent Trolls ?

The rare topic of "body hacking."  I would never see myself gaining interest in something so irrational and absurd.Actual human being placing mechanical engineered products into their bodies for various reasons such as to improve their motor skills or just for the "feeling." People who engage in "body hacking have a specific name for themselves. The want people to refer to them as "cyborgs." This term means that a person is half human and half machine Their is some specific instance where a man placed a device in his arm that connects via Bluetooth and monitors his temperature. These procedures are not done by a authorized surgeon. Therefore, there is a constantly risk for medical mishaps during every single procedure. Why would people put their lives on the line just so their bodies can perform a simple task that it could perform before? Based of the information I attained from this article, I came up with the assertion that people want to feel as if they are the owners of their bodies. Their is a huge political aspect that comes with body hacking. These people who engage in body hacking feels as if the government attempts to control society in every way, shape and form. Therefore, this is a way for them to feel free in some way. This is their way of expressing themselves and no matter how weird you might feel they are you have to respect what they stand for.

Final Paper Topic Creation

I can think of something that wasn't mentioned in class. One particular topic that I feel pertained to the overall objective/main idea of this course is the clothes that we where. The way society brain washes us to think that if we wear one thing as oppose to another it will make us much more attractive. The media used various advertisements that contain extreme bodily figures such as super models, put them in the pieces of clothing that they are attempting to advertise and cause the vast audience that watch TV to believe that if you purchase this particular piece of clothing you will look like this super model. This is something that I have been thinking about outside of this class and this intrigued me on a significant level. One thing that might shape my paper is the mass media and how it can cause people to engage in drastic action to change their image in society. People will spend large increments of money on clothes that probably will be forgotten about or replaced in a year or two.The different perspective that this particular topic can have is the point of view of the mass media. This is the unpopular point of view. Another point of view that this topic can have are the victims of this manipulation. Also another point of view that this topic can  have is the minuscule population that exist that does not adhere and allow to media's manipulation to control them. This is the dominate point of view. This issue is represented by the media's advertisements. I personal general opinion is that I completely agree that the media is wrong for making it seem as if a person appearance will look a certain way if the buy a particular piece of clothing. Generally, the main secondary resources that could help me with this paper are videos, pictures ,magazine and newspapers. Preferably something that could vividly show the media in the act of actual manipulation.

Code Switching

The video I chose to elaborate upon is the video where the young boy switches from three different languages.(English,Portuguese and French)  This is a prime example of Code Switching because it although these three different language are their own individual language, this boy seems to combine to two and create his own uniform language. He seems to switch according to who is speaking to him. When his father (who seems to be a predominately French speaker) talks to him he seems adjust according to who is speaking to me."When you watch young multilingual kids code-switching between three languages, it looks almost like a superpower." This is exactly how I viewed this video. The way this boy transitions from three different languages does in fact seem like a superpower. I have never seen anything like it. It's like this boy has three completely different sides. I find it intriguing of how much power language has. Our dialects truly do define a huge part of us as people. You can tell a lot about a person just by having a brief conversation with them.

This video is extremely similar to the conversation we had in class pertaining to black ASL and mainstream ASL. Language directly defines who you are as a person. When you see a person engaging in ASL, you immediately know that person has some connection to to the deaf community. With the language of ASL, there are different types. In class it was brought to my attention that although the word pregnant has one meaning there is two ways you can sign it dependent on what type of ASL you are engaging in. This is a prime example of Code Switching within the language of ASL.

Are Abortions dismissive?

Disabled people are constantly dismissed from society. They are ignored and people always refrain from making them the topic of conversation. In Laura Hershey's essay "Choosing Disability, she states that the procedure Abortions is an escape from disability. She feels that one of the primary reasons why Abortions are performed is to escape from the "burden" that come with disabled people. This idea is presented under specific circumstances. These circumstances are that if the doctor in charge of the baby's prenatal care feels as if there is a high chance that the baby will be born with some type of mental/physical disability, one of the common options presented by the doctor is to abort the child. The reason behind this harsh decision is that the baby will suffer with the disability throughout his/her life. Therefore, to prevent this suffrage, it is recommended that the child's life is terminated. However, in Laura's point of view, she feels that this is just a cover up that doctors use to impair people's judgment. She feels as if the doctors tell people this reason because they feel as if to maintain or make a disabled persons life requires much more time, money and effort. However, what gives the doctor the right to decide whether or not a disabled person deserves the right to live. Laura also uses the word "disabiliphobia" which is used to describe people with the fear of disabilities. Many people do suffer from this phobia and disabled people are victims of this.

"Enfreakment of Photography"

Disabled people in society are always left out when it comes to photography. They are sometimes labeled as the "dead" people in society.People leave them out not just in pictures but also discussions. I think the reason behind them being left out is because people always perceive them as incapable both physically and mentally. They are considered as less them a human being. A disability such as a person that has amputated or leg that forces them to be stationary unless they have a wheelchair or something is view as incapable when it comes to walking/running in any way. Therefore, this transcends to them being left out because people always leave out people who are incapable. Photos are usually taken to magnify or focus on something or someone that is important. They are also described as "not having a role to play." In other words, they do not contribute to society in any way, shape and form. In fact, people often view disabled people as a burden on others. They constantly cause people to go out of their ways to help them. This are the unfair assumptions that people constantly make on a daily basis regarding people with disabilities. The only time someone would be willing to photograph a disabled person  is to focus on their disabilities. The are never photographed to focus on them as a person.

The term "social death" means that a specific person or group is dead when in comes to the social world. This person or group is exempted from all social groups and norms. There are considered the "odd ball" within the social world. They are looked at as abnormal. No matter how hard this person and/or group of people attempts to fit in, the more it seems impossible to them. When this quote is applied to the photo from Diane Arbus (with the freakishly tall man surrounded by what seems to be average height) this quote makes more sense. This photo main purpose seems to  magnify this man disability. In this photo, everything around this man seems to be very small compared to him. The furniture and the woman and man are very small in this picture. There role in this picture is to show the audience that this man is abnormal and does not belong. Instead of the photo attempting to magnify him as a person, it magnified his disability. This is a prime example of how photography labels disabled people socially dead.

Fat Prejudice

Lionel Shriver presents various intriguing points and ideas pertaining to the life of someone who is "fat." He states the dramatically different treatment that exist between someone who is thin and someone who is on the "fat" side. Generally, the point he is trying to get across to his audience is that "fat" people get treated much worst than a thinner person entirely based on their weight. Specifically, he states that fat people are required of themselves to exert more effort to please the people around them. They either have to alter their personality and be someone they aren't or they have to attempt to drastically change their physical traits. This theory that Shriver presents isn't solely focused on a person's weight. It can be broadened out to other physical attributes such as teeth and other blemishes. One specific example that Shriver presents in this article is when he relates his philosophy to his personal experiences. He states that when he was 15 years of age, he got his teeth straightened via braces. Prior to his straighten teeth, his contemporaries use to tease him about this obvious flaw. They use to call him names like Bugs Bunny. However, after he had his teeth straightened, the way his classmates treated him changed. They started to treat him nicer and with more respect and even though he was they same person in their eyes he was different. This example does directly align with what I faced in my earlier childhood. I also had my teeth straightened via braces. However, prior to me straightening my teeth, I had an under bite and people use to treat me with less respect than someone who I guess had straighter teeth than I did. After I got my braces taken off, the same people who use to degrade me started to give me complements and began to be nicer to me.These are the things that exist in the society we live in to this current day but we have to learn to deal with it because the world isn't fair.

There is a specific relation that Shriver attempts to reveal to us. He basically states that everyone will at some point face some type of mistreatment as a result of their inability to meet the beauty standards that exist in society. One thing that every human being has in common with everyone else regardless of how they look is the effects of aging. A person's beauty begins to slowly and gradually deteriorate with time. As much as a person might try to change this it is INEVITABLE. Eventually wrinkles will catch up to each individual on this earth. This does in fact apply to either gender. However, women start to feel the affects of aging much earlier than men do. Therefore, no matter how attractive or admirable you were when you were old eventually you are going to at some point feel some type of prejudice. One quote that generalizes my entire point is "You will never look better than you do now!" The ideology that this quote depicts is from the peak of your beauty your looks will never incline it will always take a downfall from that point on.
